Abstract

This study aims to examine the cultural implications of national/ transnational intertextuality of a film Burning by a director Chang-Dong Lee, through a comparative analysis with the novel 『Barn Burning』 by Haruki Murakami. The film Burning expresses the young generation’s themes regarding unemployment, social inequality, and class conflict through a triangular relationship between three characters in the border city, which symbolizes national division. The story, set in 2017 in Korea’s greater metropolitan area, has the cultural implications of national/transnational intertextuality in that it applied the story set in Japan in the original work to a Korean situation. Chang-dong Lee’s film is based on Haruki’s novel, and the movie is translated and created from Haruki’s novel to a film character, Jong-soo Lee’s novel. <Burning> is described as “Burning Greenhouse” and the novel 『Barn Burning』 is written as “Barn Burning.” What is the meaning of “burning” in the movie and novel? Furthermore, how can the meaning of “greenhouse” and “barn” be interpreted? This study compares and analyzes the contextual meaning of two texts that use various metaphors, which intricately reveal the puzzles of the world. The narrative method and world view of the post-modern society expressed in Haruki’s novel 『Barn Burning』 presents a world of metaphor and mystery, and the fact that we are living in a post-truth era is maximized through Burning. Burning, in which the boundary between literature and film is unclear, represents the trauma and mental anxiety of the generation of Korean youth experiencing a compressed modern society through national/transnational intertextuality. Generation and class conflict, loss of human relationship, and social inequality are contemporary challenges that need to be resolved in the neoliberalism era, and are establishing themselves as empathetic codes of glocalized cultural contents.
