Abstract
The power realignment in the Wuling areas during the late Tang and Five Dynasties period provides an important case study in Chinese frontier history. During the political upheaval marked by the decline of the Tang Empire's centralized control, the Wuling areas underwent fundamental changes in their existing indigenous power structure. The Wuling areas had been home to influential indigenous chieftain clans such as the Tian, Xiang, Tan, and Ran families, who had been active since the Han dynasty. However, this power structure underwent dramatic transformation with the emergence of the Peng clan of Xi prefecture. The Peng clan clearly revealed their presence with the establishment of Copper Pillar of Xi prefecture during the Tianfu reign period. Regarding the origins of the Peng clan, there is scholarly debate among the theory of migration from Jiangxi, the theory of indigenous origins, and compromise views. However, there is academic consensus that they were a latecomer force distinct from the existing indigenous prominent clans. Notable is the fact that they actively utilized the changing political environment of the time, securing political legitimacy by adopting as their model the Jiangxi immigrant groups centered around Peng Gan of the neighboring Chu state. The Peng clan's seizure of power in Xi prefecture is significant as it became the practical origin of the Tusi system that would last for hundreds of years thereafter. This provides new perspectives for understanding the dynamics between indigenous forces and new political groups in China's frontier regions during the power realignment of the late Tang and Five Dynasties period.
