Abstract

This paper analyzes the formation process of Late Qing Yang Du's Gold and Iron Doctrine thought especially his political activities and ideas during his period of study in Japan, the period before he put forward the idea of Gold and Iron Doctrine. Yang is known as a thinker who frequently changed his political positions. Before studying in Japan, Yang was deeply influenced by the ideas of kingcraft, actively participating in the imperial examination. However after studying abroad in Japan, he began studying Western studies, centering on the theory of constitutionalism. During this period, Yang engaged with both Revolutionary and Royalist Party figures, gradually endorsing constitutional monarchy and aiding Qing constitutional reforms. Existing studies have generally characterized Yang's political advocacy during this period as radical and some have even considered him to be a radical revolutionary. By analyzing Yang's dialogues with Kano Jigoro, this paper argues that these existing claims are untenable. Specifically, Yang used the phrase “turbulent Progressivism” when discussing education issues, but it is difficult to interpret this to mean that he supported the anti-Qing revolution. We also found that Yang had already clearly established his perceptions of the world, nation, government, and people and during his time in Japan. These perceptions undoubtedly formed the basis of Yang's later constitutional ideas of Gold and Iron Doctrine. Therefore, we argue that Yang's political arguments during his time in Japan were in continuity with his later Gold and Iron Doctrine thought.
