<장화홍련전> 속 정동 이행의 양상과 서사적 효과

Abstract

This study reinterprets Janghwa, Hongryeon-jeon(The Story of Janghwa, Hongryeon), focusing on the implementation of the ‘Affect’. Intense emotions such as hatred, love, resentment, pain, justice, shame, and happiness of the characters in the work are expressed toward specific objects, and they constantly extend beyond the individual’s body and psychological dimension, moving towards the surrounding characters. This gives persuasive power to the actions of the subjects and contributes to the progression of the narrative. The process of replacing or changing the emotions of the characters in the work creates narratives in itself, and these narratives of the characters compete within the storyline, especially through scenes of trial. When the characters’ affective performance is witnessed by judges and readers, it significantly enhances narrative expectations and enjoyment, as well as judgments about what is beneficial or harmful. In this analysis, it is evident that affect exerts more power than anything else in convincingly presenting the narrative as a chain of events. Through this work, we can specifically examine how the literary work Janghwa, Hongryeon-jeon reflects the contradictions of the patriarchy of the time and the social realities such as the changing family system. Simultaneously, it holds the power to maintain the social structure, and the basis of the work’s strength lies in its affective states for specific events and characters.
