Abstract
This study critically examines the Korean oral folktale <The Tiger Rewarded the Person Who Removed the Hairpin from His Neck> through the philosophical lens of Gert J.J. Biesta. Moving beyond the traditional moralistic reading of filial piety, the analysis focuses on the daughter-in-law’s actions as an ethical response to the Other and as a practice of subjectification in the educational sense. Methodologically, the study applies Biesta’s threefold educational purposes—qualification, socialization, and subjectification—along with his concepts of the appearance of the subject, interruption as gift, and the beautiful risk of education. The protagonist's engagement with the tiger and the subsequent event of the father-in-law regaining sight are interpreted as moments of educational emergence and ethical responsiveness. The study contributes to interdisciplinary discourse by integrating oral literature and educational philosophy, recontextualizing traditional narratives as pedagogical texts. It further localizes Biesta’s theory within the East Asian cultural context. Future studies may extend this approach to other folktales, explore ecological and posthuman perspectives, or develop practical teaching models for classroom application.
