이 논문은 서양학계의 마오쩌둥 사상 논쟁을 분석한다. 사례는 중국 관련 학술지에서 전개된 세 차례의 논쟁이다. 첫째는 1960년의『중국 계간(China Quarterly)』 논쟁이다. 둘째는 1976~1977년의『근대 중국(Modern China)』논쟁이다. 셋째는 1986년의『호주 중국 잡지(Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs)』논쟁이다. 1994년에도『중국 계간에 마오 출생 100주년을 기념하는 특집 논문이 실렸지만, 마오 사상 논쟁은 없었다. 이런 논쟁은 서양학계의 마오 사상 연구에서 무엇이 중요한 쟁점이었고, 그런 쟁점에 대해 서양학자들은 어떻게 생각했는지를 잘 보여준다. 따라서 이에 대한 분석을 통해 우리는 서양학계의 마오 사상 연구를 이해하는 데에 큰 도움을 얻을 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the debates over Mao Zedong Thought in Western academia. It focuses on three debates that unfolded in China-related academic journals. The first was the China Quarterly debate in 1960. The second was the Modern China debate in 1976-1977. The third was the Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs debate in 1986. In 1994, China Quarterly published a special issue commemorating the centenary of Mao̓s birth, but there was no Mao Thought debate. These debates clearly illustrate what key issues were at stake in Western academic research on Mao Thought and how Western scholars viewed them. Therefore, analyzing this debate can be of great help in understanding Western academic research on Mao Thought.
