This paper investigates uymwunuy 1phay ’unexpected loss’ and uymwunuy 1sung ‘unexpected win’ from the perspectives of Positioning Theory (Davies & Harré 1990/1999). It first notices a lack of academic research on them other than some lay definitions and examples on various wikis and blogs despite their linguistic sustainability and wide circulation beyond the internet, and argues that the two deserve a linguistic investigation. After it overviews the characteristics and modes of positioning, the present study demonstrates that the two expressions, going through the stages of first-order, second-order, and third-order positionings, are constituted as a game that can be declared a win or a loss. In addition, the study finds the ‘uymwunuy’ part of the two expressions results either from unexpectedness or dispreferredness in the second-order positioning or from unexpectedness due to the absence of a participant in the unfolding discourse, not really from unintentionality as the lay definitions claim. In consequence, the current study maintains that the two expressions operate as conventionalized positioning triggers, which always initiate positionings as lexicalized chunks. In so doing, it illustrates that Positioning Theory has the potential for linguistic investigations. (Keimyung University)
