This paper investigates the dictionary and the emergent meanings of kwulyok ‘humiliation’ in public media discourse from the perspective of Positioning Theory (Davies & Harré 1990/1999), and in so doing, explores the potential of Positioning Theory to cast new light on frequent linguistic phenomena. The first part of the paper argues that the linguistic sustainability and wide distribution of the meaning which emerged across the media in the early 2000’s stands in contrast to the lack of research attention which it has received. It is, therefore, argued that the term requires linguistic investigation. Second, the similarities of the two meanings as positioning triggers are demonstrated in terms of their synchronic bidirectionality, diachronic fluidity, multidimensionality, relativity, and selectability under the framework of Positioning Theory. Third, the differences between the two meanings are also highlighted in van Langenhove & Harré’s (1999) four positioning modes. Overall, the dictionary meaning of kwulyok appears in the first-order, performative, moral, forced self- and forced other-positioning modes, whereas the emergent meaning does so in the third, accountive, personal, deliberate other-positioning modes. Consequently, the current study maintains that both meanings of kwulyok operate as positioning triggers, which invariably launch positioning. However, the emergent kwulyok may additionally function as a conventionalized positioning trigger, when occurring in certain, yet frequent collocations. In addition, the study demonstrates that Positioning Theory offers an effective framework for linguistic investigation.
