Abstract

This study employed a longitudinal phenomenological approach to examine how youth in Korean society construct and reconstruct the meaning of peace. In 2020, five participants—two elementary school students, one middle school student, one high school student, and one out-of-school youth—participated in in-depth interviews. Five years later, the same participants were re-interviewed to trace changes in their concepts of peace. The first study revealed three primary dimensions of peace: personal stability and everyday life, social structural transformation, and ethical reflection and solidarity. In the second study, these concepts deepened and were reconstituted through growth and expanded experiences, encompassing everyday stability, relational bonds, critical awareness of social inequality and oppression, self-transformation through reflection and education, and a sense of interconnectedness with others, community, and nature. Taken together, the findings indicate that peace for youth is not merely the absence of war and conflict but rather a multidimensional experience and process grounded in daily stability and relational intimacy, combined with ethical reflection that considers others’ peace and seeks the alleviation of structural oppression. By attentively listening to and understanding the authentic voices of youth, this study contributes to building educational and cultural foundations for peace.
