근대전환기와 한시의 대응 －근대 인쇄 매체와 한시와의 상관성－

Abstract

This paper explores how Korea's new modern media like newspapers and magazines discovered the value of the hansi (classical Chinese poetry) and attempted to establish mutual relations. Korea's new modern media in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was highly eager to introduce modern knowledge, modern institutions, and modern ideas, and functioned as a public forum to reproduce and spread these modern topics. As such, the new modern media played a important role in informing modernity in Korea. This paper examines how the hansi responded to this modern changes, and finds out that the modern media was active in using the hansi forms in its efforts to create modern idea of knowledge and to transfer the concept to the learned public. In dealing with this theme, this paper adopts a cultural historical perspective. The focus of the paper, however, lies in the functions of the modern media rather than in the formal transformation of the hansi related to modern changes. The paper is concerned with the process how the hansi was accommodated to the new circulation system of knowledge, and how it was classified and positioned among other types of knowledge. In these relations with the modern media, we can see signs of modernity in the hansi. Once the hansi entered into relations with the modern media, whether it was used by the modern media as a methods of transmitting knowledge or it was redefined in the new context of the time, it was open to self-transformation in forms and content. Thus, we can tell about the ways how the hansi responded to such modern changes.
