근대매체의 탄생과 시 언어의 분화－『대한매일신보』 독자투고시의 경우

Abstract

The birth of mass media served to institutionalized contributions from readers. Readers’ contribution is one of the systems proving that the relationship between media and readers plays a complementary role. While media understands from readers’ contributions how strategies and discourse of media are being confuted, readers express their ideas and feelings via their contributions. This study focused on enlightenment－Kasa(계몽가사) among readers’ contributions in Korea Daily News. In particular, the study examined realization and limitations of ‘Hanmoonche’ (style of writing Chinese) and ‘Gookhanmoonche’ (style of writing Korean with Chinese characters), which were used for enlightenment－Kasa. ‘Gookhanmoonche’ and ‘Gookmoonche’(style of writing Korean) were modern inventions replacing ‘Hanmoonche’. Therefore, their success depended on how they were properly controlling the interruption of ‘Hanmoonche’ and growing into a modern national language. ‘Gookhanmoonche’ Kasa contributed by readers often did not depart from conventional way of thinking and expression, which means that power of ‘Hanmoonche’ was very powerful. Kasa created by editors who were inactive in pioneering new style of ‘Gookhanmoonche’ also played a role in this situation. However, some pieces of Kasa were written in ‘Gookhanmoonche’ closer to today’s language system through realistic world view, desire for civilization, rapid introduction of modern Chinese characters. In contrast, ‘Gookmoonche’ appears to have fall short of ‘Gookhanmoonche’ in terms of both ideas and expression. ‘Gookmoonche’ has been regarded as the superior national language in the sense that the style used Korean only. Nevertheless, marking authority cannot solve the problem of ‘Gookmoonche’ that did not allow for expression of modern concepts, ideas, and emotions fully. Of course, this is also closely related to limits of reality that the editors failed to help the development and expansion of ‘Gookmoonche’ as much as expected.
