근래에 발굴 소개된 옥소 권섭(1671～1759)의 시가 문학 자료는 양적 다대함과 유형의 다양성을 동시에 보여주고 있어 그에 대한 주목과 꾸준한 관심이 요청된다. 이 글은 이러한 작가의 작품세계를 이해하기 위해 그가 남긴 시조 작품들을 주목하되, 특히 <笑矣乎 四章>을 중심으로 웃음에 관한 문제를 탐색하는 데 일차적인 목적을 둔다. <소의호 사장>은 웃음을 소재로 한 연시조 작품인데, 작품 자체의 표현이 워낙 특이하여 기왕의 논의에서도 이를 주목하여 작가의 개성적 면모로 언급하기도 하였다. 다만 작가의 다대한 작품세계의 일부분으로 이 작품들을 다루다보니, 본격적인 작품 논의를 통한 의미 추출의 부분에서는 미진한 감이 없지 않았다. <소의호 사장>은 표제에서부터 웃음에 관한 본격적 시조화라는 창작의도를 확인할 수 있어 작품론을 본격화할 필요가 제기되었다. 더구나 웃음에 관한 논의들이 후기시조 또는 후기문학에 필수적인 공통사항이라 할 정도로 무성하다면, 결과적으로 권섭 시조의 사적 위상을 가늠하는 데도 이 방면에 대한 고찰이 필요할 것이라 생각하였다. 이에 이 글에서는 먼저 <소의호 사장>을 중심으로 작품의 꼼꼼한 분석을 시도하되, 특히 웃음의 형상화 방식에 대한 구체적인 분석을 이끌어내고자 하였다. 그 양상으로 주목한 바는 크게 세 가지로, ⑴의성적 표현의 반복적 동원, ⑵어구 반복의 연쇄적 구성, ⑶호칭어의 활용과 관계성 회복 등이다. 다음으로 이렇게 이끌어진 작품의 특징적 국면이 웃음의 의미화와 어떻게 연결되고 있는지를 관련 작품과 자료의 도움을 통해 살피고자 하였다. 그 하나는 내면의식의 복합 표출로, 권섭 시조에서 웃음은 일회적 형상화에 그치는 게 아니라 ‘나’와 ‘남’의 가치관 대립이라는 반복적이고도 지속적인 관계성을 형상화하는 데 있었다. 다른 하나는 처세적 가치관의 조정으로, 보다 현실지향적인 작가의 관심사가 적극적인 웃음의 미학을 형성하는 기반에 놓여있었다. 결국 웃음의 문학적 형상화는 자의식과 현실인식을 보다 역동적으로 표출하는 지점이 된다. 웃음에 대한 기왕의 논의들이 풍자나 해학과 같은 후기적 변모상에 관심을 표명한 것과 다르게, 이 글에서는 한 작가의 내면의식을 이해하는 실마리로 웃음의 양상을 주목하였다. 권섭 시조의 지속적인 시적 소재이자 관심사인 ‘웃음’이야말로 세상사를 보는 작가의 가치관이 짙게 투영되어 있는 중요한 표현 장치임을 확인할 수 있었다. 권섭 시조의 특징적 국면으로 내면의식의 표출이라는 지점을 보다 분석적으로 검토한 이 글은 우리 시조사에서 내면의식의 형상화는 구체적으로 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지에 대한 보다 본격적인 논의의 활성화를 기대하고 있다.
Abstract
Kwon Seop's Siga literature data which has been discovered recently shows numerous quantity and variety of type at the same time, the attention and constant interest are required. This writing allows purpose that observe his Sijo works to understand this writer's the works, and put the primary purpose on searching subject about laugh especially centering around <Souiho Sajang(笑矣乎 四章)>. <Souiho Sajang> is a Yonsijo work on laugh, and at past discussions it is referred as the writer's characteristic aspect because its expression is too singular. But because it has been reviewed as only one part of the writer's numerous works, the abstraction of meaning through active discussion on his works. In <Souiho Sajang>, it was necessary to activate discussions on the work because we can see the writer's intention of regularizing to Sijo about laugh from the title. Furthermore, if there is enough discussions about laugh so as to be regarded commonly essential factor in late Sijo or later literature, it may need to aim to find historical status of Kwon Seop's Sijos as a result. Wished to try careful analysis of work focusing on <Souiho Sajang> in this thesis, at first, I intended to abstract specific analysis about the way of materializing laugh. I paid attention on three factors; ⑴ repeated use of echoic expression, ⑵ chain composition of repeated phrase, ⑶ use of appellation and the recovery of relationship. And secondly, I tried to observe the relationship between characteristic aspect of his work and the meaning of laugh through related works and data. One of them was the complex expression of consciousness. In his work, laugh is not a one time formalizing but a materialization of recursive and continuous relationship which is the confrontation of sense of values between 'I' and 'Other people'. Another was mediation of sense of values about getting on in life, the writer's realistic interest was put on the base that form esthetics of laugh. Finally, literary materialization of laugh becomes the spot where these self-consciousness and awareness of reality were expressed. Different from past discussions about laugh which showed interest in transfiguration aspect term such as satire or jest, I observed aspect of laugh as the clue to understand a writer's inside consciousness in this thesis. I could confirm that 'Laugh', continuous poetic theme and concerns in Kwon Seop's Sijo works, was the very important tool to express which reflected the writer's eye on the life. In this writing that analytically examine the spot of expression of inside consciousness as the characteristic aspect in Kwon Seop's Sijo works, I expect more active discussions on how is the materialization of inside consciousness being done in the history of Sijo.
