이 논문은 1911년 박은식이 창작한 우리말 노래 <역사가>의 창작 배경을 고찰한 것이다. 박은식은 1910년 한일강제병합 이후 서간도로 망명하여 동창학교 학생들을 위한 교재를 집필하였고, 그 말미에 <역사가>를 수록하였다. 그는 사범학교 교관과 교장으로서의풍부한 교육 경험, 대한매일신보와 황성신문 등에서의 언론 활동, 국문·한문을 넘나드는 역사서 및 위인전 저술 등 다방면에 걸쳐 뛰어난 역량을 갖춘 인물이었다. 이 같은이력은 그가 망명 직후 역사 교재를 집필하고, 실용적인 교육 수단으로서 <역사가>를 창작하게 된 배경을 설명해 준다. 특히 평안남도 안주학교 시찰 당시 학생들의 창가 활동을직접 목도한 경험은 박은식이 창가의 교육적 효용을 인식하는 데 중요한 계기로 작용하였으며, 훗날 <역사가>를 창작하는 동력으로 이어졌을 가능성이 크다. 본고는 <역사가>라는 텍스트 자체의 분석보다는 그 창작 배경에 주목하여 박은식의 교육·언론·저술 활동과 <역사가>의 관계를 조명하였다. 그 결과, <역사가>는 서간도 망명 직후 저술된 일련의 역사교재와 함께 창작된 작품으로 그간 박은식이 축적한 지식과 경험의 결실이었음을 알 수있었다.
Abstract
This paper examines the background of “Yeoksaga (History Song)”, a Korean-language song composed by Park Eunsik in 1911. Following the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910, Park went into exile in West Jiandao (Seogando), where he authored educational materials for students at Dongchang School and included “Yeoksaga” at the end of one such textbook. Park was an experienced educator, having served as both instructor and principal at teacher training schools. He also actively contributed to nationalist newspapers such as Daehan Maeil Sinbo and Hwangseong Sinmun, while writing historical texts and biographies in both Korean and Classical Chinese. These experiences formed the basis for his post-exile writings and helped to explain his decision to create a Korean-language song for educational use. In particular, his visit to Anju School in Pyeongan Province—where he directly witnessed students singing changga (modern educational songs)—likely played a critical role in his recognition of the pedagogical value of music. “Yeoksaga” thus served not merely as an appendix to his textbook, but as a practical educational tool informed by contemporary changga culture. Rather than analyzing the text of “Yeoksaga” itself, this study focuses on its creation process and educational context, shedding light on Park Eunsik’s pedagogical awareness and practice.
