Abstract
Lee Hyeong-sang has recorded a vast amount of music related to court rituals and folk music. In the field of classical poetry, the study was conducted focusing on the Chinese-translated Sijos and tonal theory published in the “Today’s Folk Gagog”. In particular, Lee expressed the characteristics of each tonality in many critical terms, and this study examined the characteristics of three tonality(Pyeong-jo, Woo-jo, Gyemyeon-jo) and the meaning of tonal critical terms. In order to understand the characteristics of Lee’s ‘three Tonality’ and ‘Tonal critical terms’, this study examined the tonality from the early Joseon Dynasty to the first half of the 18th century and the change and development process of critical terms. The tonality of folk music was four -Low and high tonality composed of Pyeong-jo, Gyemyeon-jo- in the beginning, and since the beginning of the 17th century, the ‘Low tone Gyemyeon-jo’ has been reduced to three, and in the 19th century, the ‘Low tone Pyeong-jo’ has disappeared and been reduced to two high tonality(Woo-jo and Gyeong-jo). Lee’s ‘Three Tonal Theories’ should be understood based on the tonal theory of the first half of the 18th century. In previous studies, all three tonality of Lee were identified as Pyeong-jo based on the composition of the notes, and it was considered that only the melody increased in the order of Pyeong-jo, Woo-jo, and Gyemyeon-jo. But Lee's Pyeong-jo means low melody and weak rhythmic tonality. Woo-jo means high melody and weak rhythmic tonality, and Gyemyeon-jo means high melody and strong rhythmic tonality, which is the same as the general tonal theory of the time. The reason why Woo-jo is Namryo-Gung and not Muyeok-Gung is that the position of Namryo-Gung is on the 3rd fret, not the 4th fret of the 2nd string of the Geomungo. The notes that make up the tone of the Muyeok-Gung tone are merely tuned notes, and in actual performance, they are played in a Mokyeo Sang tone style using the ‘Strong Pressing Method’. Lee expressed the characteristics of the three tonality in various critical terms in the article, “Korean court ritual music and folk music”. In the existing discussion, these were mainly related to the content or theme of the work. However, Pyeong-jo’s ‘Harmonious and Slow(和緩)’, ‘Exemplary(典則)’, ‘Deep and Strict(渾噩)’, Woo-jo’s ‘Clear and Refreshing(淸爽)’, ‘Rise Up(秀聳)’, ‘Organized(整頓)’, Gyemyeon-jo’s ‘Tangled(縈紆)’, ‘Rise and Fall(抑揚)’ are not the contents or themes of the work but the contrasting musical characteristics between the three tonality.
