초록
This working paper is the continuation of a previous study (Lee & Lee, 2012―hereunderLL) on the English data of long-distance (LD) wh-questions by Korean-speaking adults. Thereare two primary findings in LL that need a more explanatory account. The first concerns whynearly half of the learner population produced a wh-scope marking such as *What do youthink who bought the clothes? as an alternative to the intended LD wh-question Who do youthink bought the clothes? The second concerns why the stage of a dual wh-chain ofĀ-dependencies predates the stage of a single wh-chain for LD wh-questions. To explain the first finding, LL adopted a concept of ‘NP-shells’ introduced in Stepanov(2000) and Stepanov and Stateva (2006). An ‘NP-shell’, borrowing its term from ‘vP-shells’ islike a clausal ‘correlative’ element that takes the finite CP as a complement. It can betranslated as that, in wh-scope marking, the wh-phrase merged as a verbal complement inmatrix clause instantly c-commands the embedded clause; not just the wh-phrase in spec ofembedded C, but the entire embedded CP, as illustrated below.
