고소설의 서사방식 변화와 필사 시기 추정의 상관성에 대한 시론

이 글은 한글 필사본 고소설 중에서, 한글과 한자를 혼용하여 필사한 국한혼용문(國漢混用文) 고소설의 등장 배경, 서사방식(書寫方式)이 지닌 의미, 이후 필사본에 생긴 변화 및 생성 시기의 문제 등을 다룬 것이다. 국한혼용문 고소설은 크게 (1)한글과 한자를 혼용한 것(國漢文混用文), (2)한글과 한자를 병기하여 표기한 것(國漢文幷行文), (3)한자를 주로 사용하고 한글을 종(從)으로 사용한 것(漢文懸吐本)으로 유형을 나누고 있다. 고소설 전공자들은 이러한 유형의 국한혼용문 고소설의 존재를 잘 알고 있으며, 작품을 연구할 때 이본군(異本群)에 포함시켜 다루고 있다. 하지만 이 자료들을 단순히 후대에 필사되었다고만 언급하거나 생성 시기가 후대인 이유로 이본 연구에서 제외시키는 경우도 많다. 따라서 이러한 이본군의 서사방식이 지닌 의미, 언제, 어떠한 요인에서 산출되었으며, 이본으로서의 가치를 생각해 볼 필요가 있다. 이 글은 이러한 문제에 대한 시론적 연구인데, 요약하면 국한혼용문은 20세기 이전의 고소설 자료에서는 잘 보이지 않는 서사방식이며, 근대적 국한혼용문의 등장과 함께 이와 관련된 문학사(文學史) 관련 자료들이 등장 및 확산하면서 생긴 것이다. 따라서 이러한 이본군이 필사되거나 산출된 시기는 대체로 1910년 이후로 보아야 하며, 이러한 사회, 문화적 분위기를 반영하여 자료의 가치를 부여해야 한다는 것이 필자들의 판단이다. 국한혼용문 고소설은 단순히 일반대중들의 독서물에만 그친 것이 아니라 현대적 국한혼용문의 형성에 있어서 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있다고 여겨지는데, 이 글에서는 이러한 문제를 본격적으로 다루지 못했다. 이 문제는 차후 과제로 남긴다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning, matter of time for creation, and background of narrative in classical novels with the use of Mixed Scripts Korean and Chinese selecting classical novels transcribed in Hangeul. Generally, classical novels written in mixed Scripts can be classified into (1) those with mixed use of Hangeul and Chinese characters, (2) those using Hangeul accompanied with Chinese characters, and (3) those using Chinese characters primarily and Hangeul secondarily. Majorities of the researchers in classical novels are well aware of the presence of the classical novels with mixed scripts tend to include different versions, too, when they study the works. These materials, however, have been often transcribed by next generations just obscurely or become excluded from discussion. Therefore, we cannot discuss the meaning of narrative in those different versions or when exactly they were provided for which factors. Considering those issues, we are to examine the meaning, matter of time for creation, and background of narrative in classical novels in mixed scripts mentioned earlier. This study is based on a series of work regarding the formation of Contemporary Mixed Scripts of Korean, and the discussion proceeds by figuring out the amount of classical novels in mixed scripts which are relatively many now. In conclusion, the use of mixed scripts is not found in classical novels before the 20th century, and it appeared along with the appearance of materials related to history of literature in mixed scripts. Therefore, we think that the creation or production of the works group should be around that periods and also conclude that classical novels in mixed scripts play crucial roles in the formations of Contemporary Mixed Scripts. This study deals with introductory discussion about connection between classical novels with mixed scripts and Contemporary Mixed Scripts, and follow-up research will have to be done about this matter further afterwards.
