Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show that problems regarding ‘cultural partiality’ intervene in the process of translation, and instead admitting the partiality unconditionally, to look out the methods developing mutually two cultures and languages which contact through translation. Historically, translation has been not a passive work influenced by a ruling culture but a strategic and active one which has overturned the culture or enhanced its own culture into a ruling one. Then, considering that today's western culture(especially the anglo culture) oriented translation is ruling in global and domestic markets for translated books, I want to study what kind of translational strategy we, Korea in the area of the non-western world, have to adopt. Venuti and Berman criticized harshly the harmful effects of the translation oriented western culture and respectively suggested the foreignizing methods as the solution on them. This thesis discussed how their foreignizing methods differ from each other and finds out a hint of solving the problem of cultural partiality in translation from Berman's ‘traduction-de-la-lettre (letter translation)' which means translating source text's living letters in order to be alive in target text too. That's why if we think source text as ‘living letters', the space of translation can be considered to become not a battlefield of two cultures but a space which they help and develop together.
