Abstract
Following Lylian Kesteloot's pioneer work, "Les Ecrivains noirs de langue française: naissance d'une littérature," most Négritude researchers have almost unanimously claimed that this anti-colonial movement was fathered by the three "holy trinity," Léopold Sédar Senghor, Aimé Césaire, and Léon-Gontran Damas. Among what are left out in this picture are: the "mothers" of the movement such as the Nardal sisters, and Suzanne Césaire. Also missing are the black literary magazines such as La Revue du monde noir (1931) and Légitime Défense (1932). The first publication of these magazines preceded that of L'Étudiant noir four years and three years respectively. This study, based on an analysis of the articles of Légitime défense, argues that this magazine is entitled to be the first organ of Négritude or the black consciousness movement. In so doing, it brings to light the agenda of the magazine as a cultural movement, which Kesteloot and later researchers denied in order to paint it as an exclusively political--class--propaganda.
