Abstract

This paper studies Bartleby and Company (2000), the famous novel by Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas, which was translated into Korean in 2011. Vila-Matas is known for crossing many fields film, literary essays, short stories, and novels to build his own unique literary world. His works, including Bartleby and Company, explore the crisis of modern literature and lead new experiments in storytelling. In this paper, I look at how Vila-Matas combines self-reflective writing and the mixing of fiction and reality to think about literature from inside literature itself. He questions the very possibility of writing, but at the same time, he searches for ways for writing to continue. This makes his work a kind of meta-fiction stories that talk about the act of writing itself. Using Patricia Waugh’s theory of meta-fiction, this study analyzes the special narrative methods Vila-Matas uses in Bartleby and Company. It shows that his fiction goes beyond simple self-awareness and becomes a deep reflection on the crisis and survival of literature today. In the end, Bartleby and Company presents a paradox: even when writing seems impossible, it finds a way to live on. This paper sees that paradox as an existential experiment in modern literature.
