Abstract

This study examines the direction of class materials to enhance learners’ competencies in ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ Subject. By first exploring the meanings of ‘Written Sinitic’ and ‘Classics in Written Sinitic’, we found that the subject of ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ a subject that enables us to be a part of the written Sinitic civilization area and to ensure that the written Sinitic civilization will be the nourishment of humanity in the next era. Therefore, the subject of ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ in the general education curriculum is a subject that keeps the ‘the written Sinitic civilization area’ fresh and cultivates learners’ identity as a member of the ‘the written Sinitic civilization area’ and the competencies provided by the written Sinitic civilization, especially the insight and wisdom to realize humanity. By reviewing the ‘learner competencies’ in the world of Classics in Written Sinitic we found that the competencies that learners need to strengthen in ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ are wisdom and insight that realize humanity above all. In addition, we introduced some works that we think would be suitable as class materials for ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ and discussed the competencies that learners should develop in the course. Through some of the Gimul-myeong器物銘(aphorism on living items) works that have the status of “Classics in Written Sinitic,” we have seen examples of wisdom and insight that learners can realize in short and simple texts. Based on these examples, we hope that more specific teaching and learning models can be proposed in the future that enable learners to express and demonstrate their own wisdom and insights in the classroom environment. We also hope that the above discussion process will lead to the development of a course that enhances learners’ competences in line with the identity of ‘Reading Classics in Written Sinitic’ Subject
