Misuse is inevitable in the process of mastering a foreign language. Therefore, misuse research can also be seen as one of the distinct fields on how to learn a foreign language. Of course, Japanese is no exception. The misuse of Japanese language has been studied for almost 40 years since the 1980s by Japanese scholars as well as foreign scholars. Japanese scholars have identified and analyzed cases of misuse in teaching Japanese to foreign students, regardless of any language, because their mother language is Japanese. However, foreign researchers generally use their own mother tongue as foreign learners of Japanese, and the advantage is that they can more precisely identify the causes of misuse. However, there are a number of problems that arise in the course of the misuse analysis. This paper reviews analyses of Japanese misuse by Japanese researchers, mainly in Chinese, and presents new findings on the problems that exist while suggesting a broader outline. Also mentioned here are future challenges and prospects for the study of Japanese language misuse in China.
