Abstract

This study investigates the effect of reading children’s poetry aloud on primary English learners’ reading fluency and affective domains. English lessons were conducted over eight weeks with a fourth-grade class of 19 elementary students. The data included the students’ pre- and post-reading fluency tests, pre- and post-affective domain surveys, pre- and post-lessons surveys, student reflections, and individual interviews with students as well as teacher feedback and teacher logs. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed for analysis. The findings are as follows: Reading children’s poetry aloud enhanced learners’ English reading fluency, including word recognition accuracy, reading rate, and prosody. It also positively influenced students’ interest and participation. Students found paired reading and teacher echo reading effective for read-aloud practice. Higher and middle-level students preferred rich, vocabulary-laden texts, while lower-level students favored shorter poems with repetitive expressions. In conclusion, reading children’s poetry aloud is valuable for improving reading fluency and requires thoughtful consideration of students’ affective domains and individual characteristics in text and method selection. Creating supportive environments to reduce student anxiety is crucial. This study underscores the potential and importance of using English poems in elementary reading classes, emphasizing the critical role of aligning text selection with students’ levels and affective needs. Important implications regarding teaching English reading to young learners using poetry in elementary English lessons were further discussed.
