Abstract

The goals of this study were to (a) assess the English reading fluency of elementary school students, and (b) examine its developmental aspects. The participants were 262 fourth-, fifth- and sixth- grade children attending three elementary schools in Seoul and Gyongi Province. For data collection, oral reading fluency tests were administered to the students and their fluency was analyzed with 4 sub-scales: Reading speed, decoding accuracy, expression and comprehension. Students' mean and standard deviations at each subscale were calculated, and their reading fluency was compared to NAEP's norms (2005) for analysis. Finally, simple cross-sectional analysis was conducted to examine the developmental aspect of students' reading fluency across grade levels. Findings showed that students' fluency developed throughout three grade levels and there was a large gap in reading fluency between lower-level children and higher-level children, and the gap increased as they grew. Based on results, implication for enhancing English reading fluency in the early elementary school years was suggested.
