본 연구는 패턴 동시를 읽은 후 패턴을 활용한 동시를 쓰는 활동을 통하여 초등영어 학습자들의 어휘력 향상과 창의성 계발 가능성에 대하여 탐구하였다. 5학년 1개 학급 26명의 아동들을 대상으로 총아홉 편의 동시를 언어 패턴의 난이도에 따라 순차적으로 제시하였다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여두 가지 연구 문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 패턴 동시 활용 초등영어 수업에서 학습자들의 어휘력이 향상되는 양상은 어떠한가? 둘째, 패턴 동시 쓰기 활동에서 학습자들의 창의성은 어떠한 양상으로 나타나는가? 사전·사후 설문, 사전·사후 어휘 지식 지표 검사 결과, 수업 녹화 전사문, 아동들의 쓰기 결과물, 중간 및 최종 소감문, 교사 일지, 면담 등의 자료를 수집하여, 질적 분석 기법을 위주로 분석하되어휘 검사 결과는 양적 분석을 하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 실험 수업을 통하여 참여 아동들의 어휘력 향상을 다양한 측면에서 볼 수 있었다. 먼저, 사전·사후 어휘 점수를 대응표본 t-검정을실시한 결과 p < .05 수준에서 유의하게 높아 어휘력이 향상되었으며, 다음으로 사전·사후 어휘 지식지표 검사를 통하여 아동들의 어휘 노출 경험이 어휘력 향상에 영향을 주었음을 알 수 있었다. 또, 사전·사후 어휘 지식 지표 검사에서 어휘를 사용하여 쓴 문장을 분석한 결과 아동들의 어휘 사용 능력이발전하였음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 패턴 동시 쓰기 활동에서 아동들은 각자의 영어 수준에서 창의성을발휘하였다. 먼저, 아동들은 동시의 내용과 표현 형식에서 독창적인 면모를 발휘하였는데, 다른 사람들이 쉽게 생각하지 못하는 기발한 아이디어를 반영하여 새로운 단어 조합을 생성하거나, 시행의 배치에서도 참신한 형식을 활용하였다. 다음으로, 아동들은 동시 쓰기에서 유연성 있는 사고를 구현하였다. 즉, 서로 관련 없는 것으로 보이는 사물 사이에서 관련성을 발견하거나, 특정 대상에 대하여 다양한 관점에서 아이디어나 해결책을 찾아내기도 하였다. 연구진은 본 연구의 결과를 반영하여 교육적 시사점을 제시하였다
Abstract
This study explored the possibility of improving vocabulary and developing creativity of primaryEnglish learners through writing activities after reading patterned poems. Twenty-six fifth gradersparticipated in the study and patterned poems were provided as learning materials taking intoconsideration of English language levels. To accomplish the objectives of the study, two researchquestions were set up. First, how does primary English instruction using patterned poems impact thelearners’ vocabulary improvement? Second, what are the aspects of learners’ creativity developmentbased on writing activities of patterned poems? Data were collected from pre- and post-questionnaires,results of pre- and post-vocabulary knowledge scale tests, transcripts of classroom activities, students’writing samples, responses to the class, teacher’s journals and students’ interviews. Most data wereanalyzed in a qualitative manner and the results of pre- and post-vocabulary knowledge scale testswere analyzed in a quantitative manner. The data analysis yielded two major findings. The first findingis that primary English learning using pattered poems has positive impacts on vocabulary learning. Theresults of pre- and post-vocabulary tests proved that children’s overall vocabulary scores improved, andtheir exposure to the vocabulary showed a close relationship with test scores. The ability of usingvocabulary was developed by writing sentences using target vocabulary. The second finding revealedthat the participating children could develop their creativity through writing patterned poems. Forexample, students showed originality in terms of contents and format in writing their poems andflexibility while searching for new ideas and looking for answers to solve problems. Based on thefindings of this study, several suggestions are provided
