Abstract
This paper examines the role of embodied cognition in the cognitive semantic processing of verbs. The theory of embodied cognition states that the body, cognition and language are interconnected and interact with each other. Thus, reading or hearing words or phrases associated with sensory or motor features, such as movement, smell and sound, seems to evoke a mental simulation that activates the corresponding brain regions. In this paper, we investigate whether verb categories can be categorized based on the neurocognitive responses during the semantic processing of verbs in German and Korean speakers using EEG recordings. The results of this study show that body, cognition and language interact in the cognitive processing of sensory-motor verbs. These findings support the theory of embodied cognition and have important educational implications for language learning and foreign language teaching, as they suggest the possibility of improving learning effectiveness.
