Abstract

The purpose of the study is to explore the features and genres of informational texts suitable for content-based English language instruction. This study examined the importance of content-based English language instruction from the perspective of genre development. It analyzed the features of informational texts and their implementation aspects. Furthermore, it categorized types of text genres in informational texts in detail and discussed considerations when selecting informational books to ensure that they serve as optimal reading materials. It is important to examine whether informational books richly include print, graphic, and text organizational features. From a perspective of text genre, it is also crucial to identify the presence of expository informational texts. Selecting reading materials based on these criteria will promote the development of expository text genre and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency), which are the purposes of content-based English language instruction. Calling for the importance of content-based English language instruction, this study is significant in that it suggests ways to select reading materials from a perspective of genre development that truly align with the purpose of content-based English language instruction based on a proper understanding of informational texts.
