漢語で喉內入聲韻と舌內入聲韻が非促音形として表れるとき、語幹の末子音/k/や/t/の後に高母音[u]あるいは[i]が挿入される。このような母音挿入の際、k語幹(喉內入聲)では語幹の母音と挿入母音の[back]の素性が一致する母音調和が表れるが、t語幹(舌內入聲)では母音調和は表れず、語幹母音の種類に関係なくデフォルト母音[u]が挿入される。このような差は舌背音(Dorsal)/k/と舌頂音(Coronal)/t/の母音調和に対する透明性の差に起因したものであると説明できる。母音挿入が起る際、入力形の語幹母音の調音位置素性を拡散させれば、出力形で母音の調音位置素性の添加を必要としなくなる。即ち、Dep(VPlace)制約の違反なしに母音挿入が行われる。ところが、このような母音の調音位置素性の拡散で語幹母音に隣接した子音を飛ばしてはならないので、母音の調音位置素性が隣接した子音にも連結される。このように、母音の間の子音に母音の素性が拡散されれば、子音は元の調音位置素性に母音の調音位置素性が追加されるが、舌背音/k/の場合、舌背音に母音の調音位置素性の追加を禁じる制約*Dor&VPlaceが入力形になかった母音の調音位置素性を出力形に挿入するのを禁じる制約Dep(VPlace)より下位の制約であるため、k語幹では*Dor&VPlaceの違反にも関わらず、語幹母音の調音位置素性が拡散され母音調和が表れる。その反面、舌頂音/t/の場合、舌頂音に母音の調音位置素性の追加を禁じる*Cor&VPlaceがDep(VPlace)より上位の制約であるため、t語幹では母音の調音位置素性が拡散されず、デフォルト母音が挿入され母音調和が表れないのである。
