Abstract
Cross-linguistically, there are some tendencies that consonant clusters, made up of coda of previous syllable and onset of subsequent syllable, are simplified by several phonological processes. This paper examines consonant cluster simplification in Sino-Japanese root compound. There are two patterns of simplifying C₁C₂of /...VC₁+ C₂V.../: place assimilation and vowel epenthesis. These two processes are applied complementarily. In this paper, I will argue that the main factor which applies place assimilation and vowel epenthesis asymmetrically is Syllable Contact (Murray and Vennemann 1983, Vennemann 1988); vowel is inserted between sonority rising clusters and place assimilation is applied in clusters with same or falling sonority levels.
