초록
This study aims to explain vowel centralization in Ebie Japanese within the framework of Optimality Theory. High vowel /i/ and /u/ are centralized after coronals and both lose distinction each other in Ebie Japanese. The centralization of the back vowel /u/ is caused by the constraint *t/[back] which prohibits coronals before back vowels. And the centralization of the front vowel /i/ is caused by the constraint Pal(hi, front) which requires coronals are palatalized before front vowels. This paper reveals that the palatalization in Tokyo Japanese and the vowel centralization in Ebie Japanese are due to a phonological conspiracy to satisfy the constraint Pal(hi, front). In many Japanese dialects, including Tokyo Japanese, coronals before high front vowels are palatalized to comply with the constraint Pal(hi, front). However, in Ebie Japanese, because the constraint Ident(ant) is highly ranked than the constraint Ident(back), coronals before high front vowels are not palatalized. Instead of that, high front vowels are centralized. As a result, /i/ and /u/ lose their distinction after coronals in the Ebie Japanese.
