This paper examines vowel coalescences pattern in two dialects of the Southern and Eastern Chubu region in Japan within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993/2004, McCarthy and Prince 1999). Shizuoka Japanese and Owari Japanese have similarities in coalescence pattern; two vowels are coalesced in favor of preserving not only lower feature in vowel height but also frontness over backness. This two dialects, however, differ in preserving roundness: Owari Japanese preserves the roundness in coalesced vowel but Shizuoka Japanese does not. I will analyze this patterns with the ranking of markedness constraints on vowel inventory (e.g., *[+low, -back], *[+low, +round], and *[-back, +round]) and faithfulness constraints on vowel features (e.g., Max[feature]).
