Abstract
This study investigates elementary school teachers’ perceptions and training needs regarding English AI Digital Textbooks (AIDT). A survey was conducted with 66 teachers from diverse regions, and written interviews were collected from 9 participants. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Overall, teachers viewed AIDT as a useful tool for English teaching and expressed positive intentions to implement it. They highlighted its potential for enhancing student motivation, supporting personalized learning, and enabling AI-based assessment and feedback. However, they also voiced concerns about technological infrastructure, teachers’ digital competence, learning gaps among students, and content reliability. Challenges in classroom implementation included mismatches between content and student level, unstable devices or networks, difficulties in mastering functions, and time management issues. Teachers called for practical improvements such as securing dedicated time for AIDT use, expanding training opportunities, fostering collaboration, and providing administrative support and collaborative support among teachers. Teachers preferred hands-on, practice-based training over theory-oriented programs and favored blended formats that combine in-person and online sessions. They emphasized the need to improve access to training, diversify learning opportunities, connect with teacher learning communities, and establish systems for sharing best practices. Differences in perceptions emerged by teaching experience and prior training. Experienced teachers focused on adapting AIDT to fit instructional contexts, while novice teachers were more eager to explore new tools but needed specific usage guidance. Teachers with prior training showed greater confidence and contextual application, whereas those without training expressed uncertainty. Regional disparities also affected access to AIDT-related resources and training. This study offers insights into enhancing AIDT adoption in elementary English education, underscoring the need for structured teacher training and continued professional development.
