Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which characteristics found in the prelinguistic phase of L1 children, particularly social interaction and curiosity, can be applied to EFL university learners. Participants were English majors with intermediate to upper-intermediate proficiency. The film The Best Offer (Tornatore, 2013) was used as the main learning material. Learners engaged in peer-led, autonomous learning over an eight-week period that aimed to replicate an L1-like environment. After the course, they completed two assessments: the Emotion Trace Test and the Contextual Language Understanding Test. In the first, four of five participants did not demonstrate successful emotional access to the film. In the second, all participants showed evidence of successful immersion through contextual comprehension. While participants appreciated the autonomy, all indicated the need for instructional guidance. Their reflective comments revealed a growing attraction to emotional interpretation, which appears to support narrative engagement. However, due to the short duration of this case study, it was not possible to observe the connection between narrative immersion and actual language development. Future longitudinal studies should examine whether narrative entry leads to the acquisition of cultural nouns, related language fragments, and eventually patterned language use. Such findings may validate applying L1-based learning principles to adult L2 learners.
