초록

This study investigates English spelling errors among South Korean adult learners, focusing on error patterns and developmental stages. Eighteen college students in Seoul participated in word spelling tests, producing 1,260 words for analysis. A total of 246 errors were identified, with individual error counts ranging from 4 to 38. Vowel-consonant errors were the most frequent, consisting of 52.03% vowel errors, 38.21% consonant errors, and 9.76% other errors. The primary error types observed were substitution, deletion, insertion, and order mistakes. According to Gentry’s (1982, 2000) spelling development stages, most learners were heading toward the Correct/Conventional Stage and demonstrated some features of the Transitional Stage. These findings provide insights into the spelling development of adult EFL learners and underline the need for targeted instructional strategies, particularly for struggling spellers in adult education. This study contributes to understanding spelling acquisition and highlights the importance of identifying and supporting poor spellers in foreign language education.
