초록
본 연구는 최적성이론의 틀 속에서 중고일본어에서 발생한 형용사 음편을 설명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일본어의 형용사 음편에 나타나는 연구개음 /k/의 탈락을 설명하기 위해 본고에서는 모음 간의 연구개 폐쇄음을 금하는 유표성 제약 *VkV를 채택한다. *VkV 제약에도 불구하고 /k/ 탈락은 /a, e, o/ 앞이 아닌 /i/ 또는 /u/ 앞에서만 발생했다.
Abstract
Within the framework of Optimality Theory, this study seeks to explain the so-called Onbin deletion of velars from adjectives in Late Old Japanese. This research employs a markedness constraint *VkV that precludes intervocalic velar stop to explain the velar deletion in Japanese adjectives. Velar deletion occurred only before /i/ or /u/, not before /a, e, o/, despite the *VkV requirement. This is due to the constraint *VV[-high], which prohibits diphthongs with a second vowel that is not high. In order to prevent a breach of the *VV[-high] requirement, velar deletion did not occur before non-high vowels /a, e, o/. Eastern Japanese did not have the velar deletion before /u/, unlike Western Japanese. This disparity in dialects between East and West in the history of Japanese could be explained by a discrepancy in the constraint rankings of *VkV and *Vu. [Vu] is marked as a diphthong more clearly than [Vi]. On the Western Japanese dialect, the constraint *VkV ranked higher than *Vu, hence the velar stop /k/ was deleted before /i/ and /u/. On the Eastern Japanese dialect, *VkV was ranked lower than *Vu. So /k/ was only deleted before /i/ and not /u/. Since Early Modern Japanese adopted Eastern Japanese as a common language, /k/ deletion before /u/ no longer occurs in Modern Japanese.
