Abstract
In the 1910s, the Japanese government focused on national unity, which was one of the new government's top priorities, with the imperial view of history as the focus of education, and attempted to mold children in Japan and its colonies, Korea and Taiwan, into subjects. In particular, the Japanese textbooks contained the national ideology that was the core of colonial assimilation education. The Ise Jingu Shrine, which enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, is mentioned in the Japanese textbooks of all three countries. All of them claimed the divine immortality and inviolability of the emperor based on the myth of the eternal lineage. The emperors highlighted were Emperor Jimmu, Emperor Nintoku, and Emperor Meiji. Emperor Jimmu was coupled with the myth of the "golden kite," while Emperor Nintoku was portrayed as an emperor who cared about his people. Korean textbooks most often emphasized the gracious image of the Meiji Emperor. To recognize the emperor's presence, textbooks devoted a large number of prints to the emperor, with 14% of the textbooks in the Normal School National Language Reader in Korea, 11% in the Taiwanese Public School Reader, and 6% in the Japanese Regular Small School Reader. Emperors associated with colonizing countries were also the most frequently mentioned in Korean textbooks. In Taiwanese textbooks, Emperor Meiji is mentioned briefly. As you can see, the number of emperor-related units is Joseon → Taiwan → Japan in descending order. It can be seen that more Korean children were instilled with imperial ideology, such as reverence for the Emperor and imperial favor, than in Japan or another colony, Taiwan.
