Abstract

Refusal is considered a type of linguistic expression that can easily damage interpersonal relationships. Although research on Japanese refusal has yielded abundant results thus far, there are relatively few studies on refusal in specific contexts such as the business situation. This paper collected date from workplace scenes in Japanese TV dramas to examine refusal expressions in "request" situations from the perspective of Discourse Politeness Theory, and clarifies the "default" of refusal and its characteristics. Our finding indicates that the "default" of refusal is "implied refusal," "apologization," and "explicit refusal" in inferior-to-superior scenes, "content confirmation," "apologization," and "reason explanation" in equal relationships and superior-to-inferior scenes. This can be attributed to the Japanese culture of "concealing one's thoughts" and "seeking empathy."
