초록

This study examined changes in Korean learners’ attitudes toward Japanese kanji through classroom practice. Two surveys were conducted before and after approximately two months of instruction in a first-year university course, “Japanese Kanji through Sentences.” The course combined theoretical explanation of kanji principles with contextual exercises involving on/kun readings and sentence use. The comparison of results showed that learners’ perceptions shifted from “difficult” and “hard to memorize” to more positive attitudes such as “interesting” and “understandable.” Free responses indicated increased awareness of stroke order and radicals, deeper understanding of kanji structure, and greater motivation to continue learning. Moreover, students who initially regarded kanji as a burden began to view it as an essential tool for accurate comprehension and expressive ability. These findings suggest that combining theoretical understanding with practical, learner-centered activities can effectively reduce anxiety, foster confidence, and promote sustained engagement in kanji learning among Korean learners of Japanese.
