Abstract

This study investigates learners’ perceptions of Japanese Kanji learning and analyzes the effectiveness of a Kanji class designed based on those perceptions. A pre-class survey revealed that learners perceived “Kanji reading” and “writing” as the most challenging areas among various aspects of Japanese language learning, and that they simultaneously held high expectations and significant anxiety regarding Kanji instruction. Reflecting these findings, the class was structured around core Kanji and incorporated step-by-step activities that linked form, readings, meaning, sentence usage, and cultural elements, supported by visual materials and context-based teaching strategies. Post-class survey results indicated that learners found the class to be effective in enhancing their vocabulary and understanding of Kanji, as well as in boosting motivation and confidence. In particular, the integration of cultural context and repeated exposure to target expressions appeared to help reduce psychological barriers toward Kanji learning. This study demonstrates the pedagogical value of structurally expanding Kanji instruction with cultural integration and highlights the importance of learner-centered curriculum design in Japanese language education.
