Abstract
This paper examines the Japanese translation of Chunhyangjeon. Focusing on novels published after 1945, this study analyses Lee Eun-jik's maiden publication, the 1948 New Edition of Chunhyangjeon, which has not been previously studied. Compared to translations by modern Japanese to introduce Korean culture, the 1948 New Edition of Chunhyangjeon as a rechauffe of Chunhyangjeon by Korean-Japanese writer Lee Eun-jik is considered a groundbreaking piece of Japanese literature. As Lee Eun-jik said, Chunhyang, Mongryong, and Bangja were portrayed as characters with a modern consciousness, and the novel presented these protagonists as the ones who were awakened from feudal ethics to new ethics and had a sense of indignation against evil for the sake of freedom and liberation. An important point of the rechauffe was the addition of a new character named Mr. Duchang. The setting of rebellion against the king of the day in resistance to the ruling class was something that had not been seen in previous Japanese translations of Chunhyangjeon. I think this setting was chosen because it resonated with Mongryong's pain of being forced to walk the path of a traitor by becoming a true secret royal inspector and Lee Eun-jik's pain of being an outsider in Japan as a Korean living in Japan.
