Abstract
This study focuses on the use of modality in Japanese presentations and aims to clarify the characteristics of speakers' speech styles by comparing two different academic fields: the humanities and social sciences, and the natural sciences. Specifically, both main and auxiliary modalities were analyzed and categorized into six types—expression type, evaluation, cognition, explanation, communicative attitude, and subjectivity/objectivity—based on presentations delivered by university professors or researchers in each field. The analysis partially supported two of the three hypotheses: Hypothesis 1 (that objective modality is more frequently used in natural sciences, while subjective modality is more prevalent in the humanities and social sciences) and Hypothesis 3 (that explanatory modality is used more frequently in natural sciences). However, Hypothesis 2 (that communicative attitude modality is more common in the humanities and social sciences) did not show a clear trend. These findings suggest the importance of teaching learners how to select appropriate modality depending on context and audience, offering valuable insights for the development of practical presentation skills in Japanese language education.
