1920년 개벽에 황석우가 월평을 쓰면서 시작된 황석우현철 사이의 논쟁은, 현진건의 희생화에 대한 황석우의 혹평이 현철을 자극하여, 종국에는 논의의 초점이 두 사람 사이의 감정싸움으로 심하게 변질된 것으로 당시 문학계에서는 일반적으로 이야기되었다. 그러나 현철과 친척 관계에 있는 현진건에 대한 황석우의 비판은 실제로 이 논쟁의 과정 중에서 전혀 중요한 논점으로 다루어진 적이 없다는 점에서 항간의 이러한 구설(口舌)은 실제로 현철과 현진건의 관계에서 유추된 루머에 불과한 것이다. 오히려, 이 두 사람의 논쟁에는 1920년대 초반에 있었던 어떤 논쟁보다도 근대시의 개념과 장르적 특징, 민족시 등의 다양한 논점을 비교적 심도 있게 이론적으로 모색한 흔적이 남아 있다. 그러나 종래의 문학사 연구에서 현철과 황석우의 논쟁은 그 이론적 논의나 비평사적 의의가 거의 간과된 채 일종의 문학사적 초기 현상에 해당되는 인신공격과 초점이 빗나간 인상비판, 현학적, 의도적 오독 등이 난무한 수준 미달의 초기 문단적 해프닝으로 여겨져 온 것이 사실이다.이런 지금까지의 평가에는 여러 가지 원인이 있지만 무엇보다 가장 큰 이유는 논쟁 중에 드러난 황석우, 현철의 비평적 수사가 지나치게 사적이고 정제되지 않은 어법, 형식을 취하고 있기 때문이다. 즉, 그 논의에 있어서 중요한 문제의식을 제시하고 있음에도 불구하고 그 논쟁의 형태는 미숙함을 넘어서 실제로 수준 미달의 비평적 글쓰기를 보여주고 있는 것이다. 이런 비평적 글쓰기의 미숙함은 근대문학 초기 비평의 한계를 그대로 드러낸 것이기도 하지만 다른 한편으로는 새롭게 제기될 수 있는 비평적 과제에 대한 문제의식이 자연스럽게 돌출된 결과이다. 따라서 이 논쟁은 표면적으로는 현철과 황석우 간의 감정싸움으로 보이지만, 그 내막에는 민족시의 개념과 신시의 정체성 문제가 중요한 논점으로 존재하고 있다. 이 논쟁은 상징주의자인 황석우의 서구 지향적 데카당 취향과 현철의 문화론적 민족주의의 상반된 시각이 충돌하면서 빚어진 것이라고 할 수 있다. 현철이 쓴 장문의 글 批評을 알고 批評을 하라는 이 점에서 신시의 정의에 대해 당시로서는 보기 드물게 치밀하고 이론적인 논의를 전개하고 있다. 1920~1921년 사이에 이루어진 이러한 논의는 이후 최남선의 ‘시조부흥론’, 김억의 ‘민요 중심의 조선시 구상’, 주요한의 ‘조선시 주장’ 등으로 이어지면서 국민문학파를 중심으로 한 ‘조선시, 국민문학’ 개념의 정립으로 발전된다는 점에서 특히 주목을 요한다.황석우, 현철 간의 논쟁에서 우리가 주목할 부분은 이러한 신시에 대한 초기의 이론적 모색과 현철의 글에 나타난 신시의 정체성에 대한 문제제기이다. 서양시와 신시의 차이를 묻는 현철의 질문은 새롭게 건설해야할 민족시의 정체성과 장르적 특성, 그리고 전통적인 시가와 현대시의 연속성 문제 등이 포괄적으로 담겨 있다는 점에서 초기 시단의 문제적 지점을 정확하게 지적하고 있는 것이다.

Abstract The identity of SINSI or modern poetry and JOSUN-SI Kim, Chun-Sik This treatise treat on argument between Whang Seokwoo and Hyeon Cheol from 1920 to 1921. In that time, many people who was in literary society said This argument was changed to something like a struggle caused of uneasy feeling of them. However, this argument has more important meaning at the point of that the idea of modern poetry and the particular of genre, national poetry etc. were groped theoretically through the argument than any other arguments in that time. Though, until now, it is supposed something like a happening in early literary society, in which wrong impressive critic, intended misreading were full with passing over the theoretical discussion and the meaning of critical history in that argument. Even though in that estimate are some reasons, the biggest reason is private discourse which they showed through the argument. They suggest some important issues but their critical writing showed a kind of immature critical skill in their writing. However, in other side, this argument has very important issue such as the idea of national poetry and the identity of new Korean poetry in 1920s. At the result, This argument broke out from conflicting Whang's decadence, which is declined to the west culture, with Hyeon's Cultural nationalism. Especially, The point that we have to pay attention to, is the suggesting issue, by Hyeon Cheol, about the identity of new poetry. The issue of Hyeon asking about difference of new Korean poetry(Korean modern poetry) from west poetry have pointed exactly to problematic spot in this meaning that have been including generally some problems as identity and particular of genre on national poetry, sequence of traditional poetry and modern poetry.
