『중용中庸』에서 ‘성誠’은 상대적으로 큰 주목을 받지 못한 개념이다. 성리학적 맥락에서 ‘성性’과 같은 것으로 취급되는 것 이외에는 『중용中庸』에서의 성誠이 그 자체로서 어떤 의미를 지닌 개념인지에 대해서는 학자들의 주목을 비켜갔던 것으로 보인다. 이 ‘성誠’을 로저 에임즈Roger T. Ames는 ‘창조성creativity’이란 개념으로 해석하고 있다. 일반적으로 성誠이 ‘성실함,’ ‘정성됨’ 등으로 이해되어 온 방식에 비추어 보면 상당히 파격적인 해석이라 할 수 있다. 이 글은 에임즈가 어떤 의미로 성誠을 ‘창조성’으로 해석하였는지를 검토해 보는 한편, 이를 통해 드러나는 에임즈의 중국철학을 해석하는 방식도 함께 비판적으로 검토해 보고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 위해 필자는 우선 『중용』에 대한 일반적인 이해를 소개하는 것으로 논의를 시작한다. 그 다음으로 성誠에 대한 선진문헌에서의 논의와 이에 대한 전통적인 이해를 일람할 것이다. 이렇게 함으로써 에임즈의 『중용』의 성誠에 대한 이해가 지닌 특징을 바로 볼 준거가 생길 것이기 때문이다. 이러한 이해를 배경에 두고 에임즈의 성誠에 대한 이해를 살펴보는데, 그 작업은 우선적으로 에임즈의 비교철학적 문제의식을 살펴보는 데 집중한다. 에임즈의 『중용』과 성誠에 대한 논의의 핵심은 문헌적이거나 역사적인 이유나 시각에 있는 것이 아니라 그의 비교철학적 문제의식에 있기 때문이다. 이런 작업을 통해 우리는 에임즈의 성誠에 대한 논의를 비판적으로 고찰할 시야를 확보할 수 있다.
Abstract
‘Cheng’ is relatively a neglected concept in the Zhongyong. It seems that ever since the advent of neo-Confucianism, a neo-Confucain interpretation of cheng in terms of human nature (xing) has been a dominant understanding of it. Roger T. Ames, instead, offers ‘creativity’ as the translation of cheng. Given that the term, cheng 誠, has been generally translated as ‘integrity’ or ‘sincerity,’ his rendering of cheng as creativity appears to be quite radical. This paper aims to examine the way Ames employs ‘creativity’ as the translation of cheng and in so doing, it also explores the way Ames interprets Chinese philosophy in general. I will begin my discussion with the introduction of the common understanding of the Zhongyong and the survey of the concept of cheng in early Chinese literature and traditional commentaries on it. This enables us to examine what is characteristic in Ames’s understanding of the Zhongyong and cheng. Then, I will focus on Ame’s view on comparative philosophy since it is not philological or historical reason but comparative philosophical one that leads him to construing cheng as creativity. Through this exploration we can gain a perspective from which to consider Ame’s interpretation of cheng critically.
