이 논문은 주희의 해석에 기반하여 중용 제1장의 성(性)–도(道)–교(敎) 구조를 성기성물의 존재론적 기반으로 삼고, 성(誠)과 미(美)를 중심으로 성기에서 성물로 확장되는 과정을 교육철학적으로 고찰한다. 특히 성(誠), 곧 진실한 마음이 도덕적 형상으로 외화되어 타자에게 감응을 일으키고, 이 감응이 자발적인 자기완성을 추동하는 양상에 주목한다. 이때 ‘미(美)’는 성인의 덕이 체현된 도덕 형상으로서 타자에게 제시되는 본보기[法]이자, 그 형상에 감응한 타자가 이를 내면화하여 실천하는 본받음[效]의 구조를 매개하는 핵심 요소로 작용한다. 궁극적으로 이 연구는 ‘미’가 교육 본래의 관계성과 사회성을 밝히는 핵심 매개 개념임을 밝힘으로써, 유가 교육이 단순한 개체의 도덕적 완성을 넘어, 타자와의 상호작용 속에서 반복적으로 확장되는 관계 기반의 도덕 실천임을 해명한다.
Abstract
This study reinterprets the Confucian educational structure of Chéngjǐ–Chéngwù (成己–成物, self-completion and completion of others) in the Zhōngyōng (中庸, Doctrine of the Mean) through Zhū Xī’s (朱熹) philosophical framework. Moving beyond the conventional division of Chéngjǐ as education and Chéngwù as politics, it reconstructs the entire structure as a relational and affectively responsive educational process grounded in Zhū Xī’s view of learning (xué, 學) as the embodied emulation (xiào, 效) of moral exemplars, where ethical forms are internalized and enacted through affective resonance. The analysis begins with the ontological triad of xìng (性, nature), dào (道, way), and jiào (教, teaching) in Chapter 1 of the Zhōngyōng, revealing how inner moral principle unfolds into relational teaching. It then examines how sincerity (chéng, 誠), once embodied, is externalized as měi (美, beauty), which functions as an embodied emulation [fǎ, 法] of ethical virtue and evokes gǎnyìng (感應, affective resonance) in others and leads to their voluntary self-cultivation. This study argues that měi functions as both the internal goal of self-cultivation and the aesthetic medium that initiates the embodied moral emulation of ethical exemplars. Ultimately, it identifies měi as a key ethical form mediating the relational expansion of Chéngjǐ–Chéngwù, thereby redefining Confucian education as a responsive and interactive moral practice.
