Abstract
Producing Sovereign Spaces in the Emerging Cold War World Order: Immediate Postliberation "South" and "North" Korean Literature Theodore Hughes How did immediate postliberation literary texts work to produce the divided nation, the North/South binary which in many ways continues to inform contemporary identities on the Korean penin sula? In this paper, I examine the ways in which literary texts in the immediate postliberation period set in motion historical trajectories that intersect both with the statist narratives of the ROK and DPRK and the rapidly polarizing Cold War order. I trace the emergence of postcolonial subjects associated with "North" and "South,"paying particular attention to how the visualizing and mapping of territory, forms of cosmopolitanism, negotiations with class, gender, and familial structures all contributed to the production of postliberation identities associated with the notion of "home."
