Abstract

This paper examines Focusing on King Yeongjo, who left the most autobiographical works in the history of Korean autobiographical literature, and the Yeongjouhjecheop(英祖御製帖), background, characteristics, and meaning of the works with outstanding autobiographical character among the Yeongjouhjecheop More than 5,000 Yeongjouhjecheop by King Yeongjo in his old age were written as a new alternative to expressing the life, thoughts, and emotions of his old age after King Yeongjo declared that he would not build more poems than his predecessor. Therefore, one can examine the life and thoughts of King Yeongjo in his old age rather than the official collection of writings. The representative theme and subject of Yeongjouhjecheop was retrospective, and there is a strong tendency to reflect on oneself and confirm one's identity through the process of recalling the past and realizing reality. In this way, retrospect and reflection, inquiry into one's existence, and firm perception of the self can be said to be the main background for the birth of numerous autobiographical works in Yeongjouhjecheop. Yeongjouhjecheop contains various types of autobiographies, including prose and verse, and the subject matter and writing material are more than one. Among them, there are two main characteristics that differentiate themselves from other autobiographies of the Joseon Dynasty. First, most of the autobiographical writing is filled with reflection and reflection on oneself who failed to Hyo-Je(孝悌) while reflecting on life centering on the history of one's own family. Second, he shows both traditional and novel writing by utilizing various materials such as his values, reading history, cicadas' sounds, and worries. Yeongjo's autobiographical works are the data that best shows the basic character of the Yeongjouhjecheop and show the life and emotions of Yeongjo distributed in the Yeongjouhjecheop in an integrated manner. The autobiographical works of the Yeongjouhjecheop have special significance in that there has been no case in the history of Korean autobiographical literature in which an individual has shown such various types and writing methods. Most importantly, his autobiographical works have two-sided self-consciousness and identity as individuals and public figures in that they can confirm all of Yeongjo's personal history, personal memories, and values he has held since he was young.
