Abstract

This article examines the structure and features of Yeongjouhjecheop (英祖御製帖) by analyzing almost thousands pieces of Yeongjouhjecheop which have been stored in Jangsogak (藏書閣). Youngjouhjecheop is a sole and exclusive source not only to learn his life and literature, but also to figure out politics of the time and culture. King Yeongjo wrote a couple of Uhje (御製, Works written by the king) everyday, making use of his writing skill and his leisure hours in his old age to relieve himself from illness and to drown his sorrows. But he decided not to write more than the poems written by King Sookjong. He made more pieces than the writings in Yolsunguhje (列聖御製) and published those pieces as separate books titled 「Burok (附錄, supplement)」 and 「Jipkyoungpyonjip (集慶編輯)」 respectively. For the purpose, he ordered Seungjeongwon (承政院) to make hardcover books, and that is how those pieces have remained and stored as an album. Yeongjouhjecheop contains various feelings that King Young-jo has experienced as an emperor and many thoughts that he had in his old age, as well as indignation and self-grief for the reality and life itself. The features of Yeongjouhjecheop are defined as 'Yeongjoche (英祖體, Yeongjo style)' which represents life and emotions of the emperor, introspection and retrospection, and which symbolizes repetition and anacoluthon. Through this kind of studies, we can identify the real figure of Yeongjo as a person or as a king in the time, in the culture, and in the history objectively. In addition, we can lay a cornerstone to study further about the royal culture in the late Joseon dynasty period (朝鮮).
