면암에게 있어 효, 성실, 군자란 개념은 삼위일체와 같은 의미이다. 면암은 늘 삼가고 살피는 것에서 성(誠)이 완성된다고 하였으며, 선행은 중단 없이 실행해야 함을 일깨웠다. 면암이 추구하는 도(道)는 검소한 덕과 넓은 마음을 견지하는 삶에서 이루어진다. 목전의 세상사가 자신의 뜻과 어긋나더라도 군자의 숙덕(宿德)을 실현할 수 있었던 것은 수기(修己)에 철저하였기 때문이다. 혼탁한 세상에서 맑고 깨끗한 심성으로 살면서 도심(道心)을 구현하였다. 진정한 군자는 외형으로만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 진실한 삶에서 이루어지는 것임을 나타내었다. 면암은 선비들이 행해야 할 도리가 무엇인지를 성찰하였다. 군자의 숙덕(宿德)으로 존경 받은 면암은 건곤일척(乾坤一擲)의 각오로 의병(義兵) 활동을 비롯한 애국의 길에 헌신하였다. 또한 그는 군자의 삶을 이룬 사계의 숙덕(宿德)이 영원히 계승되기를 희구하였다. 속인(俗人)의 삶에서는 자적(自適)의 기풍을 견지할 수 없음을 시화하였는데, 자신의 안위(安慰)만을 생각하면 충의(忠義)를 따를 수 없는 것이다. 면암의 마음은 항심(恒心)에서 우러난 시정신과 연결되어 있다. 늙은 소나무는 자신이 품은 뜻을 형상화하기 위해 의인화한 자연물이다. 눈서리를 맞아도 푸르른 자태를 잃지 않은 소나무는 면암의 청절(淸節)을 상징한다. 면암은 이 땅에 성학(聖學)이 뿌리내리고 대대로 계승된 세월이 짧지 않음을 보여주었는데, 사람의 도리를 실천한 선비들이 끊임없이 배출된 것은 공맹(孔孟)의 가르침에 힘입은 것이라 하였다. 그는 성학(聖學)이 도탄에 빠진 백성을 구할 수 있으며 나라에 큰 힘으로 빛을 발할 수 있다고 여겼다. 독실(篤實)한 마음으로 살아야 유도(儒道)를 이루고 참다운 학자의 삶을 구현할 수 있다. 면암은 참다운 선비의 수기(修己)가 선한 영향력으로 전파되기를 바라고 있다.
Abstract
Myeonam considered sincerity important and thought that sincerity was a way to realize enlightenment. Therefore, it was understood that sincerity always stems from practicing good deeds. Myeonam practiced without stopping good deeds. The degree of Confucius pursued by Myeonam is related to frugal virtues and a broad mind. Even if the world in front of me went against my will, the reason I was able to live with the right mind is because of the discipline of my mind. Myeonam lived a reasonable life in a dark world with a clear and clean heart. In the poem of Myeonam, it was indicated that the true wise men are not made up of appearance only, but of truth and responsibility. Myeonam reflected on what scholars should do. People who only think of profits expressed that they cannot be relaxed. When thinking about their wealth, they do not have great aspirations. Myeonam expressed his unwavering heart and dedication in his poem. The old pine tree is a metaphor for the eternal heart. The pine tree, which has not changed its blue appearance even after being hit by snow, symbolizes the straight heart of Myeonam. He was a scholar and a gentleman with loyalty. Myeonam showed that the Confucian scholarship took root in this land and that the years of succession from generation to generation are not short. According to him, the teachings of Confucianism lead the people to a comfortable life and make the world peaceful. According to his writings, the cultivation of the mind of a true scholar can lead the world to a good influence.
