Abstract

This study intended to explore the structure of Kyung-ni Park’s independent world of poetry which had been overshadowed by her fame as a novelist by determining how she perceived the poetry genre and understood the principle of poem. Park perceived writing as a consolation and prescription. For the writing of poem as a prescription for the frustration and pain incurring from the writing of novel, she perceived it separately as the characteristics of poetry genre. Especially, she manifested positive attitude in contrast with the negative attitude toward the novel by associating the poetry genre with the agent of love and morality and approached it as the record toward truth negating the elaboration or the rhetoric of language. The key theme in Park's poems is the sense of life, and the poetic principle and method can be summarized as follows. First, it is the consciousness of confinement and heterotopic placeness. By moving to Wonju, Gangwon-do, Park actualized the sense of confinement and concentrated on writing poems after completing 『The Land』. Especially, she manifested the paradoxical and complicated principle of life through the places like ‘Wonju’ and ‘Yard.’ What is important is that they are manifested as the actuality, the heterotopic placeness, rather than utopian nature. Second, it is the contradicting structure and activeness of life. The life of Park's poems is in the contradicting structure based on confrontation and conflict, and the life is regarded possible by the contradicting relationship. For example, life exists when the birth and death exist at the same time and the activeness of life is emitted when different things develop tension in a heartless manner. In other words, the ultimate direction of Park's sense of life is not the life itself but the activeness due to the contradicting structure of life. This is a unique world of poetry constructed by Park as a poet, and it has the unique implications for it shows Park's unique principle of the sense of individual life unlike ecological poems wearing the characteristics of romanticization, abstraction, and enlightenment from the 1990’s and on.
