Abstract
This paper examines how investor characteristics and financial literacy affect fund investingbehavior, using a mutual fund investor survey of 2,576 subjects who were selected by stratifiedrandom sampling. I calculate quiz score as a proxy for the financial literacy and compare the quizscore with self-declared score which may contain overconfidence. I find that higher financial literacyis related to more aggressive attitude, higher profit target, higher loss endurance level. Interestingly,self-declared scores of men and internet channel users are significantly higher than that ofcomparison groups although quiz scores of men and internet channel users are not different fromthose of women and non-internet channel users. I also find U-shape relation between quiz scoreand internet-channel preference, and that men have tendencies to be aggressive, to prefer internetchannel, to choose funds before they select sales broker, to search information actively, and toendure more loss compared to women. Finally, I test whether return chasing is irrational behaviordue to financial illiteracy and find that subjects with higher quiz score place emphasis more onpast performance than subjects with lower quiz score. This paper using survey data contributesto the understanding of fund investing behavior in the absence of account-level data.
