Abstract
This study is to examine the relationship between the yen carry trade market and the Koreastock market during global financial crisis using asymmetric and bivariate GARCH-BEKK Model. The empirical results of this study are summarized as follows : First, the correlation coefficientbetween the yen carry trade market and KOSPI (KOSDAQ) market is estimated by 0.304(0.350). Second, regardless of global financial crisis, causality relation in returns is dominant from stockmarket to yen carry trade market. Third, only during global financial crisis, the shock spillovereffect between cross markets is observed and bidirectional. This indicates that the shocks arisingfrom the yen carry trade market impact on KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets, and the shocks arisingfrom KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets impact on yen carry trade market. Fourth, conditional volatilityspillover effect is bidirectional between yen carry trade market and Korea stock market, but conditionalvolatility spillover effect is more dominant between yen carry trade market and KOSDAQmarket. Fifth, this study shows asymmetric volatility effect which implies that negative innovationsin either market increase volatility more than positive innovations. Asymmetric volatility effectruns from KOSPI market to yen carry trade market and from yen carry trade market to KOSDAQmarket during global financial crisis. Consequently, based on the thus results, yen carry trademarket and Korea stock market interact more during global financial crisis than ordinary times.
